How to care for your cork yoga mat
1. CLEAN IT SOON AS YOU GET IT!
Use a drop of a gentle dish soap diluted very heavily with plenty of water, and wipe it gently with a very wet paper towel or non-abrasive sponge. You'll notice that some excess ink is being removed. Don't worry this doesn't fade your design, the natural properties of the cork fight water, including the water based ink we use. This initial wipe process just removes the excess and doesn't fade the design. Take advantage to run your hand on the mat and get acquainted. Note how the water doesn't get absorbed but floats atop. See how the grip is actually enhanced when it is wet.
2. REGULAR CLEANING
Your mat is self cleaning so NEVER use mat cleaners, they will only fade the design and reduce the performance of the cork. If you regularly practice in sweaty conditions, you may wish to clean your mat more frequently but remember that whilst our planet-friendly cork yoga mat materials are remarkably durable for Yoga practice, over-cleaning or using abrasive products will wear out the materials faster. We do not recommend using any mat cleaner sprays or sprays with essential oils, as they can potentially damage the mat.
If you take it to the beach, or out on an adventure the simplest way to clean it is by just hosing it off!
3. LET IT DRY
Our cork mats repel water and dry extremely fast, even if you lose it in a wave. Just remember that after any sweaty practice, and after cleaning, hanging your mat to dry will prolong its lifespan.
4. ROLL IT UP
Roll up your yoga mat with the top side (the cork side) on the outside between uses. It’s designed to be rolled this way, and this will help ensure your mat rolls out nice and flat at each time you use if for your practice. Plus it just looks way cooler!
5. USE YOUR MAT
Using your yoga mat, may be one of the last things you expected to see for care instructions, but like a new snowboard, skateboard, or a fresh pair of sneakers the more you use it the more the mat will mold to your style and flow. You will very quickly reap the benefits when practicing handstands and other poses that distribute your weight directly to few points.
Cork can hit users with a bit of a learning curve, so if you feel the mat is slippery don't blame the mat! Check your alignment, and that you are engaged in your pose properly. If you need a little more grip a little water on your palms will give you that straight away.
6. HAVE FUN
Our cork yoga mats are unlike any other in our lineup. Their durability and second to none grip when wet allows you to really explore and enjoy it outside of the studio. So next time there is a summer rain why not enjoy a flow in it. Cleaning the mat and having a blast in one pass!
